Minimum System Requirements ============================== Hardware: PC: Pentium, 32 MB, sound card, 800x600 video with 256 colors Software: PC: Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT 4.0 Netscape Navigator 4.08 (http://www.netscape.com/download/) or Microsoft IE 4 (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.htm) Chime 2.0.2 plug-in (http://www.mdli.com/download/chimedown2.html) QuickTime 3.0 plug-in (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/) Hardware: Macintosh: PPC, 32 MB or RAM or better, 800x600 video with 256 colors Software: Macintosh: MacOS 8.1 MRJ 2.1 (http://www.apple.com/java/) Netscape Navigator 4.08 (http://www.netscape.com/download/) Chime 2.0a plugin (http://www.mdli.com/download/chimedown2.html) QuickTime 3.0 (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/) Browser Configuration Notes: For the CDROM version of HMChem, browsers must be set to accept cookies to connect to the HMChem Internet site. For Apple Macintosh computers, Netscape Navigator must be configured for Java to work with HMChem on the CDROM. See the section Configuring Navigator for Apple Macintosh below. If you are unable to reach the WWW sites to download the software, you can obtain the software from the download (PC) or macdownload (Macintosh) directory of this CDROM. If you use the CDROM files, follow the instructions in part 5 of this readme file to install the software. 2. Testing Browser Configuration ================================ To determine if Netscape Navigator or Microsoft IE is configured correctly, open the HMChem test page (information/tester.htm) on the CDROM. 3. Starting HMChem ================== To start HMChem, use Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer to open the file index.htm on the CDROM. 4. Changing the HMChem Internet Site ==================================== Although most of HMChem is contained on the CDROM, there are some features that require access to the HMChem Internet Site. By default, HMChem on the CDROM searches for the Internet site located at Binghamton University, in upstate New York, USA. You can change the Internet HMChem site to Cubic Science, located in southern California, USA, by using the browser to open the file changeremotesite.htm located on the CDROM. This file is also available from the help page of HMChem. Note that this procedure only changes the HMChem Internet site of the browser. If you install the HMChem CDROM on another computer, the browser on the other computer may or may not have the same HMChem Internet site. 5. Installation of Download Software ==================================== If you are unable to use the Internet to download the necessary software as described in "Minimum System Requirements" above, you can use the software on the CDROM. Follow these instructions. a. Installation of Netscape Navigator 4.08 for the PC: 1. Open the download directory on the HMChem CDROM. 2. Open the netscape directory. 3. Double click on the file n32e408.exe. 4. Follow the onscreen instructions to install Netscape Navigator. b. Installation of Chime plug-in for Netscape Navigator for the PC: 1. Open the download folder on the HMChem CDROM. 2. Open the chime folder. 3. Double-click on the file ch202w32.exe 4. Follow the onscreen instructions to install the Chime plug-in. c. Installation of QuickTime plug-in for Netscape Navigator for the PC: 1. Open the download folder on the HMChem CDROM. 2. Open the quicktime folder. 3. Double-click on the file quicktime.exe 4. Follow the instructions to install the QuickTime plug-in. d. Installation of Netscape Navigator 4.08 for the Apple Macintosh: 1. Open the macdownload folder on the HMChem CDROM. 2. Open the netscape folder within the macdownload folder. 3. Drag the nav4.08_ex_ppc.bin file to the desktop. 4. Double-click nav4.08_ex_ppc.bin on the desktop. This should start the process of uncompressing the file. If prompted, select Stuffit Expander from the list of applications. If prompted "... obtain "DropStuff with Expander Enhancer ...", click on OK or Don't Remind Me. A new item should be created on your desktop: a folder labeled "Netscape Navigator (TM) 4.08" on the desktop. 5. Double-click on the folder named "Netscape Navigator (TM) 4.08" on the desktop. 6. Double-click on the "Start here" icon. This starts the installation process. 7. Follow the instructions for installation of Netscape Navigator. 8. Increase the memory allocation for Navigator to 12 MB. To do this, select the Netscape Navigator (TM) file within the Netscape Navigator folder. Press the Command (Apple) key and the I key simultaneously. This brings up an window with information about the file. In the memory requirements box, type in 8000 for Minimum Size, and 12000 for Preferred Size. Close the window by clicking on the box in the upper left-hand corner. 9. Click on Restart when prompted. e. Configuration of Netscape Navigator for Java applets for the Apple Macintosh: 1. Start Netscape Navigator (version 4.08 or higher). 2. Click on Edit in the menu, then click on Preferences. 3. Click on the category Navigator. 4. Click on Applications. 5. Click on the New button. 6. In the Description field type in "HMCHEM Java applet" (without the quotation marks). 7. In the MIME type field type "hmchem/x-applet". 8. In the suffixes field type ".hmca" 9. In the Handled by area click on the application radio button. 10. Click on the Choose button. 11. Navigate to the HMChem CDROM, then select the macdownload folder, then select the Apple Applet Runner folder. 12. Select Apple Applet Runner, then click on Open. 13. Click on OK. 14. Click on OK again. f. Installation of Chime plug-in for Netscape Navigator for the Apple Macintosh: 1. Open the macdownload folder on the HMChem CDROM. 2. Drag the Chime_2.0a_Installer.hqx file to the desktop. 3. Double-click on Chime_2.0a_Installer.hqx on the desktop. If prompted "... obtain "DropStuff with Expander Enhancer ...", click on OK or Don't Remind Me. This will create two files labeled "Chime_2.0a_Installer.hqx.1" and "Chime 2.0a Installer" on the desktop. 4. Double-click on "Chime 2.0a Installer" on the desktop. 5. Click on Install. 6. Select the Plug-ins folder of the version of Netscape Navigator (version 4.08 or better) you will use for HMChem. If you have followed the previous steps to install Netscape Navigator from the HMChem CDROM, the Plug-ins folder will be found in the Netscape Navigator (TM) Folder on the hard drive you selected for the install. Note that the HMChem molecular display will only work with Netscape Navigator versions whose Plug-in folders contain the Chime plug-in. 7. When the installation has finished, click on Continue to install the Chime plug-in for another version of Netscape Navigator, or click on Quit to exit the Chime installer. g. Installation of QuickTime for Netscape Navigator for the Apple Macintosh: 1. Open the macdownload folder on the HMChem CDROM. 2. Open the QuickTime folder within the macdownload folder. 3. Drag the QuickTime_3.smi.bin file to the desktop. 4. Double-click on the QuickTime_3.smi.bin file on the desktop. If prompted "... obtain "DropStuff with Expander Enhancer ...", click on OK or Don't Remind Me. This will create file labeled QuickTime 3.smi on the desktop. 5. Double-click the QuickTime 3.smi file on the desktop. This will create a QuickTime Installer folder on the desktop. 6. Double-click on the QuickTime Installer folder on the desktop. 7. Double-click on the Installer file within the QuickTime Installer folder. 8. Follow the on-screen instructions for the installation of QuickTime 3.0 9. Click on Restart when prompted. h. Installation of MRJ for the Apple Macintosh: 1. Open the macdownload folder on the HMChem CDROM. 2. Open the mrj folder within the macdownload folder. 3. Drag the mrj_2_1_2_smi.bin file to the desktop. 4. Double-click on the file mrj_2_1_2_smi.bin on the desktop. If prompted "... obtain "DropStuff with Expander Enhancer ...", click on OK or Don't Remind Me. This will create file labeled QuickTime 3.smi on the desktop. 5. Double-click on the "MRJ 2.1.2.smi" file. This will create a folder on the desktop labeled MRJ Install. 6. Double-click on the MRJ Install folder on the desktop. 7. Double click on the Installer file within the MRJ Install folder. 8. Follow the instructions on screen. 9. Click on the Restart" button when prompted.
